Yesterday my son's "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" party went off with much enthusiasm. We started off by coloring while waiting for everyone to arrive. After that we started into the book,
reading each page together and then completing a corresponding activity.
Page One: Invite. (In the light of the moon a little egg lay on a leaf)
Page Two: We made our own tiny caterpillars out of beads and twist tie wire. (One Sunday morning the warm sun came up and -pop!-out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry caterpillar.)
Page Three: We ate all the fruit the caterpillar did. (He started to look for some food. On Monday he ate through one apple. But he was still hungry. On Tuesday he ate through two pears. But he was still hungry. On Wednesday he ate through three plums. But he was still hungry. On Thursday he ate through four strawberries. But he was still hungry. On Friday he ate through five oranges. But he was still hungry. )
Page Four: We went on a hunt with our caterpillars for all the foods he ate on Saturday, hidden around in the kitchen. (On Saturday he ate through one piece of chocolate cake, one ice-cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami, one lollipop, one piece of cherry pie, one sausage, one cupcake, and one slice of watermelon. That night he had a stomachache!)
Page Five: We all ate mint leaves. (The next day was Sunday again. The caterpillar ate through one nice green leaf, and after that he felt much better.)
Page Six: We ate the big, fat caterpillar cake. (Now he wasn't hungry any more-and he wasn't a little caterpillar any more. He was a big, fat caterpillar. He built a small house, called a cocoon, around himself. He stayed inside for more than two weeks. Then he nibbled a hole in the cocoon, pushed his way out and...)
Page Seven: We used the food beanbags to play a toss game into a butterfly box. (he was a beautiful butterfly!)

After that I passed out the bugbox favors. We put our little caterpillars inside and opened presents.
If I may, I must comment on this picture. To the left I am proud of my son saying 'Thank You' to his friend for the great gift, to the right, well look close at his hand. I laughed so hard when I uploaded this photo!
For the record they are not fighting. They are working together to open the gift. So very boy of them.
It was all in all a great party. I couldn't have done it without my husband who stayed home from work and obliged all my bossing without complaint. Of course, my three year old could have been a bit more easy going about it all, but it was his party and he wanted to cry a bit. We will just have to practice good hosting again next year.

I absolutely LOVED this idea! It was so cute and original. Andrew had a blast and I am way glad I got to see pictures of all the fun things you did. Kate's a bit jealous of his bug box...but it's big enough, I'm sure it'll fit both their bug findings.
Good job on being a fantastic mommy!
That would be my child scarfing down the cake like he hasn't had anything to eat, ever. Ryker had a great time and carries his party favor around every where. Thanks for inviting him.
Wow Kim! I'm so impressed but I guess I shouldn't be since you are the queen of parties! Especially Mocktails! Loved all the ideas and I'm sure all the kids had a blast!
