NOTE: no spoiler here...you can read this safely.
Okay, so I just got back from Seattle and the two day hiatus from life that followed. I read #1 on the day flying out there, took a break for a few days to do my thing there, bought #2 the day before I left for the way home but started that night so I needed to buy #3 in the airport the next day. I got #4 yesterday and just finished. I am a really fast reader but also I must give the books credit for being good at sucking one in. Having said that, I'm very disappointed in it all.
I think as a writer S. Meyer improved over the course of the books but somehow also lost a lot of the uniqueness and ingenuity of the story line. After reading Twilight, I was way impressed with her ability to come up with such a cool concept. New Moon and Eclipse were good but not so noteworthy. Then, the really bad fall from creativity and surprise came in book 4. I had a better ending picked out (and I'm not a good story-teller/writer).
The other BIG issue for me was my dislike for Bella. Again, not so bad in book 1, but later I just wanted to scream, "grow up!" She was constantly throwing a fit about stupid stuff. I guess you have to be way melodramatic, have no sense of fear, and be completely ridiculous (bad taste too, but I won't say about what...don't want to ruin anyone's chance to discover for themselves) to be loved by a vampire. Shucks.
As a side note, I'm not sure I understand everyone's feelings about inappropriate content in book 4. I think if you want to be upset about a teenager reading it then you should have felt that way in book 3 too. Just my opinion.

I enjoyed these books a lot, or at least they were addicting to read- except book 2 and part of 3. For the life of me, I cannot understand how people are completely obsessed with them?! Also, are people seriously complaining about inappropriate content in book 4? I haven't heard anything but I'm not out west either.
I guess, now reading over my post it sounds like I didn't enjoy the books. I did. I was just disappointed because after starting out so good I expected more.
Oh Kim.... I could go on forever about this series,(or about any book because I love to discuss this stuff..) I have to agree with you on everything you said. Bella needs to grow up and then in the fourth book she kinda does because the plot makes her, but it doesn't fit her character. She is a weak character, I don't relate to her and I think Meyers could have done so much better. On the other hand I LOVE Jacob...he is the only character she really develops. (I mean half the fourth book was from his perspective) Grrrr... vampires are a cool concept I just don't think she got the job done. That is all.
I haven't read the books yet. Stephenie Meyers used to live in Riley's parent's ward. She is super nice and I'm so happy for her success. I'm afraid to start because I know I won't be able to put it down.
I have to say I am not sure I would have been as addicted to them if I actually read them I listened to them and then my mind can create much more freely, so I think it is easier to get sucked into a book you are listening to. I haven't yet listen to the last book I am on a long Hold list from the library! But I am sure I won't be satisfied with the ending, as I hate to see a series end, but then you hate to see ones keep going that should have ended :P I look forward to the days when I can sit and peacefully read again! :)
You made very valid points and I agree. I was disappointed with the last book. I would love to get together and discuss sometime.
