I see it, I want it!

A few years ago during my student teaching at Orchard Elementary I had a funny experience.
One of our morning routines in this first grade classroom was writing a journal entry. When each child finished they brought it to me at my desk and read it aloud. I would usually prompt them to write more or help them find a mistake like and uncapitalized word. After returning to their desk and fixing the mistake I would most often put a smile on the page and send the student off to the appropriate literacy center. Sometimes it took several tries to get a smile as was the case on this day with Alex.
It was a holiday (I think the 100th day of school, maybe) and so there was a bowl of candy on my desk for later (again, I think for counting to 100). When Alex first came up to have his journal checked he asked for a piece of candy. I said, "no, that's for later." He read his journal and I pointed out that it was missing some punctuation at the ends of the sentances. Before he left to fix it he said, "Pleeeeeease, can I have some candy?". I said, " no." A few minutes later Alex returned. He read the entry then persisted even further, " if I see it, I want it!" I laughed and moved the bowl behind me up on a bookshelf. As he headed back to fix a period into a question mark I heard him call over his shoulder, "I can still see it!"

I tell this story because I think if Benson could make a sentence it would be, "Mom, I can see it , and I WANT it. " Mr. Independent in our house seems to see and want everything. That's the story of my days lately, not exciting but definitely time consuming. This is a picture of me with the first grade class from the story. Alex is in the first row between the two yellow shirts.

Cute story. You can tell just by looking at the kid that he is quite the character. Kids always say the funniest things.

There was supposed to be a new line (or two) between those first two lines. . . but I think you know what I meant.

Andrew is that same way- esp. when it comes to something Jensen has. He is grabby to the point of no return. Jensen always gives in because Andrew can beat him up.
